There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling den betting is against the law. Eight casinos are established in a relatively tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The amazing income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of restrictions requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; although, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly required to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of most borders.
The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge gambling den, contains 150 slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga river boat is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the normal tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel building that features numerous comforts on top of the gambling hall, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 tables.
