There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just across the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is against the law. Eight casinos are established in a generally small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent spot, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, financing sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are apparently needed to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau gambling hall, highlights 150 slots and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 gambling halls in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous conveniences aside from the casino, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and 88 tables.
