There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that reside just over the border from next door Thailand, where casino betting is not permitted. Eight casinos are established in a relatively small space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored boat gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty slots and 60 table games. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are 150 one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that contains numerous comforts aside from the gambling hall, which houses 10,000 square feet of 130 slots and 88 table games.
